Use a VPN to Increase Small Business Productivity

Our workforce has become more decentralized and telecommuting has become commonplace. Businesses of all sizes now depend on VPN’s or “virtual private networks”. VPN’s are secure, private networks that run across the public networks (Internet). These VPN’s allow workers to remotely and securely access your computer network, as though they were working at their desks in your office.

If you or your employees are routinely away from your office and need access to your company’s network, a VPN is an inexpensive way to increase productivity — without sacrificing security.

The name “virtual private network” gives you a clue about how VPNs actually work. VPN software programs “carve out” a section of the Web, and allow only authorized users to access it. This virtual network works across the existing network and yet it’s private!

Your remote workers enter their secure login credentials and they are granted access to the VPN gateway at the office. Now they access the network just as if they were at their desks. They can work with software programs, read and send e-mail, even open and store files. Whatever their work requires them to do, but without requiring them to drive into the office, or occupy their desk.

Creating these secure links between the remote user and the network, requires only two parts.

First you need the “VPN client” which is software that’s installed on the remote users computer. Second you need the “VPN gateway” which is on the network side. This screens out unauthorized access attempts and safely lets in your authorized users.

Additional security is provided when the “VPN client” encrypts all data before sending it out. On the other end the “VPN gateway” decodes the data once it arrives.

Even very small companies can reap the benefits of VPN technology. Windows Small Business Server and Windows 7 have built-in VPN capability. So if your network runs on Windows Small Business Server, it’s just a matter of enabling and configuring the VPN features. Crossroad Technologies can quickly and easily configure these options for you.

There are open source alternatives, too — some of them designed for the home PC user. Let me know if you want to explore these options. However my best recommendation is to use one of the Windows Small Business Server options.

I know that most people thinks Acronis True Image is one of the best back-up software out there.

But, I have read that people have had trouble performing a complete recovery from a image copy that they had made.

That is, in event of a "disaster" such as having to re-install Windows, they have not been able to do a complete recovery from the copy they made.

I would like someone who have used Acronis to answer this question.

Thank you

i am professionaly using acronis from last 3 years and never had any problem with the backups. WE use GFS backup strategy as our disaster recovery plan.

its a good idea to have multiple backups in case one gets corrupt.

Hi,
Yesterday a friend of mine came to my place to drop him some music files into his usb. But into his usb, there were some other files, that he wasn’t able to recognise himself!
My pc started lagging, and therefore I was forced to do a reset.
When it opened, I formatted the usb just to be sure that no virus is on it, and then disaster started.
First of all, the antivirus starts and closes immediately. I’ve runned trojan remover 3 times , removed what was found but nothing… The virus is still here… And what do I mean? Internet Explorer windows pop-up every once in a while getting me into strange chinese sites.
In addition I can’t download many things from rapidshare (… when I press download firefox closes)! WinRar opens whatever it wants!
I’ve runned Eset Online Virusscan, and it found 10 viruses. I’ve made even a system recovery, but still nothing..
I have 2 hdds, and therefore if I must format them, I will lose all the important personal files of my.
So what to do? Back the files and format the hdds? Try another magical antivirus? or just get my pc done in a technician and get me ripped off?

If its a anti virus protector the only way you can, or the only way I could get rid of it was downloading a free malware program, even though I had one on my computer already..

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the instant response. I’m currently running MalwareByte’s Anti-Malware and then I will use the other software you recommended. I was surprised to see that it was successfully installed as I thought there was some kind of banlist to the files used

If you have to reformat you only have to do the hard drive with your OS on it. Viruses don’t attack data. I have two HDs and four partitions on my desktop: one for XP, one for Vista, one saved for Win7, and one for data. If/when I get malware that causes too much damage to repair I just reformat the infected partition and everything else is safe. But I still backup to another PC and DVDs frequently in case the second hd crashes.

Which two statements are true about username and password standards? (Choose two.)
The username naming convention should be kept simple.
Usernames should expire periodically.
The passwords should be kept simple and easy to remember.

Which wireless security technology is a good choice when using Cisco equipment in conjunction with operating systems such as Windows and Linux?
LEAP

I’m ultimately about to ask about partition recovery but please read on for the specifics!

Well today has been a techno disaster

Windows went down so booted to an old 6.06 lts ubuntu live cd to fix the mess.

Decided to do a backup of my important files first so connected my 1TB drive with lots of important files…..but of course ubuntu couldn’t write to ntfs properly back then so hit a problem.

To solve it I fired up parted switched to my backup drive. Which had all the options grayed out as it was mounted.

No matter. Terminal > sudo umount /dev/sdb

….not found.

After a seconds thought I right clicked the desktop icon for the drive and chose eject. Then refreshed parted. Options ungrayed result.

Entered two changes: resize the original ntfs backup partition with all of my files on it to leave 7odd th at the end. And reformat that empty space with extra3.

Selected option to write changes to disk.

Task one started then suddenly ubuntu remounted the drive of its own accord before the first task had completed. I can only assume it has some misguided urge to mount external disks.

An error screen also popped up which I closed too quickly without reading it as I wrongly concluded it was the second new partition which had also been mounted.

Now gparted shows the disk as divided into two with both marked as of unknown filesystem. The second takes up no actual space but appears on the list. The first has maintained its boot flag.

Help how do I recover my backup partition??

1) A floppy disc is actually a piece of Mylar similar that is used for overhead transparencies
2) A 3 1/2 inch high density floppy disc has 224 entries in the root directory
3) Subdirectories can have as many entries as disk space allows
4) You may share IRQs with ISA devices on the ISA bus
5) THe number of memory addresses is partly limited
6) Hard copy is a term associated with a printer
7) Newer motherboards typically do not provide a connection for a floppy drive
Most SRAM now inside the processor housing
9) WHen examining memory measured in nanoseconds, the larger the number, the faster the memory
10) CISC CPUs are typically faster than RISC CPUs
11) One port fails on a non critial machine. You shold replace the motherboard
12) In windows 9x, a compressed drive is not a drive at all, its a file
13) Hardware disk cache is faster thank a software cache
14) You should verify that your recovery plans works by practicing it before disaster occurs

Thanks for your time

How will you learn if I tell you the answers? But here they are:

1. False – it’s a magnetic surface
2. True – yes, 224 root directories possible
3. False – Windows has a limit on directories and subdirectories- 255 deep maximum.
4. False – ISA are memory address specific-no sharing.
5. True – only sixteen IRQ but with port steering and USB managing them, it can appear to be more than sixteen.
6. True – hard copy/paper copy
7. False – Yes they do in case you want to use them.
8. False – SRAM is on cards, HD and hardware -too slow for processor.
9. False – smaller is always faster
10. False – less instructions to prevent slow down of processing time.
11. False – Just use another port if available
12. True – A compressed drive would not function-only a big file.
13. True – way faster!
14. True – of course!

Let me know how I did on your homework.

Before, with XP, one can constantly reformat the harddisk of a laptop by using recovery CD. One can even do partioning from DOS. Now, with Vista, there is no CD. Vendor told me that I can do recovery from the harddisk in C: drive. If I totally delete my harddisk and repartition it, it means disaster.

u need an imaging app like acronis to back it up .. then u could restore it to a different sized partition as long as its large enough …

If you work at a small business, or you work at a huge corporation, chances are your data is backed up to tape using Backup Exec or a similar program that does full and either incremental or differencial backups in the background after 7pm that allows you to continue working on your data in spite of a performance slowness.

However in a home-office setting, it seems there is no such thing as backup software, there is no such thing as incremental or differential backups, you’re left to drag-and-drop files to a thumb drive and keep all your install disks handy.

Is it me or is that a completely insane oversight? Shouldn’t there be some more professional alternative to that? Or should I just accept the fact that Windows Explorer and a safe to keep the install CD’s is the only thing home users or home office users will ever have as a "disaster recovery solution"? Or .. and here’s a scary thought … is it simply that NOONE EVER BACKS UP THEIR COMPUTERS EVER?

I don’t know about your computer, but the very first thing there on system tools is "backup" on mine.

Or you can type "backup software free" into a search engine. I just got this as a return:

backup software free Showing 1-10 of 22,610,000

I’m sure one of those 22 millions hits would do the job. There’s even more if you want to pay for it.
